Not in practice. Under the current Gambling Act, online casino licences are tied to holders of a Hungarian land-based casino concession, and sports betting and lotteries are run by the state operator. That is why only a handful of brands are licensed today.
This is expected to change as the legislation is reworked. We track every step and will update clients as soon as the new rules and application process are published.
No date has been confirmed yet. The direction is clear, but the timetable depends on the new legislation and the regulator's implementing rules. Operators who prepare their structure, documents and partners now will be ready to apply on the first day.
Gambling in Hungary is supervised by the SZTFH (Szabályozott Tevékenységek Felügyeleti Hatósága), the Supervisory Authority for Regulated Activities. It licenses operators, supervises compliance and maintains the blocking list of unlicensed gambling sites.
Hungarian licensing has always required meaningful local presence, and we expect the new regime to keep some form of local entity, local representative or key-person requirements. We plan for this from the start, so your structure does not have to be rebuilt later.
